I was recently reading an article about the longevity of certain gaming franchises and why they don’t seem to lose their player base even when high-end 'AAA' titles with realistic graphics come out.
It seems like the secret isn't in the graphics, but in the 'infinite' nature of the gameplay. For instance, the way Mojang Studios has handled updates and community-driven content is probably the best case study for this. They’ve managed to keep a game that looks like blocks relevant in 2026 by focusing on player creativity rather than just visual upgrades.
I’m curious to get everyone’s take: Is it the community/modding scene that keeps these games alive, or is it just the simplicity of the core mechanics? I’d love to hear about other studios that you think have mastered this 'endless' gameplay loop as well!
