Real vs Fake Oud Oil: How to Tell the Difference

I was checking several oud samples for my fragrance ideas when an unexpected [quality inspection of newly sourced agarwood oil] made me realize how difficult it can be to spot the difference between real vs fake oud oil. Genuine oud oil is extracted from resin-infected agarwood trees and has a deep, complex aroma that evolves over time, while fake versions are often synthetic blends that smell flat and disappear quickly. Real oud usually has a thick, slightly viscous texture and colors ranging from golden brown to dark amber, whereas fake oils often appear watery or unnaturally bright. Another key sign is the scent development—authentic oud changes gradually on the skin with woody, smoky, and sweet layers, while synthetic oils smell the same from start to finish. Price can also reveal a lot; because genuine oud is rare and difficult to produce, extremely cheap “pure oud” is usually diluted or fake. Understanding these differences helps buyers avoid low-quality oils and choose authentic oud that truly delivers depth and longevity.
